What is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion is a form of acupuncture, only, it doesn't involve needles. Moxa, or moxibustion is a very interesting and effective treatment, and with very little side effects, its use is becoming more common for those needing relief from pain, caused by arthritis, fibromyalgia and M.S. Hopi Direct sell a complete range of equipment for beginners through to therapists for moxibustion, for both direct and indirect applications.
It is one of few treatments that can still be used in pregnancy, and combined with its results, is a popular method of repositioning a breech birth.
What is Moxa?
Moxa is a herb called Artemisia vulgaris latiflora, otherwise known as mugwort or, wormwood. The leaves of the plant are dried and pulverised, which turns them into a light brown mixture, and looks like mulched cardboard. It doesn't look like much, but once burnt, it fills a room with a powerful odour, and gives off great warmth which provides the healing effect.
Using moxa to treat cold conditions
By the words 'cold conditions' we refer to a range of symptoms and conditions, which are linked to an area being cold in nature within the body. It does not refer to the normal common cold.
Cold conditions include:
Painful joints
Aches and pains
Infertility
Nerve Pain
Arthritis
Poor Circulation
Low energy
Depression
We do not recommend using moxa directly on children without having first sought the advice of a practitioner
The Basics of Moxibustion
There are two types of moxibustion, indirect or direct.
Direct moxibustion uses 'moxa cones' or pieces, which are placed directly onto the skin and lit. If not done properly, this type of moxibustion can burn the skin, scar or cause blisters, and for that reason, we recommend direct moxibustion is only undertaken by professionals.
Indirect Moxibustion involves holding a lit moxa roll over the affected area, or pressure point, in order to achieve desired effects. As the moxa roll is not in any contact with the skin, this is the method we recommend for at home and beginners who wish to practice moxibustion on themselves.
Tools for Moxibustion The moxa burner
All our moxibustion starter kits feature a pure copper burner. Copper, known for its high conductivity and purity, is a great material for a burner, as any heat produced is conducted to the release points. One end features a release gauze, where the heat and fragrance escapes from, and this is the end which should be held in the affected area. Because of its shape, the un-burnt moxa is also protected and can be held safely without breaking, and if the burner is dropped, it won't set light to a carpet instantly, hence, we recommend for home use.
The moxa box
Works like a big burner, and warms a large area, ideal for relieving stomach pains, period pain, and lower back aches.
