Nene Hatun’un cesaretli ve soğukkanlı bir yapısı vardı. Kocasının kolay kolay geri dönmeyeceğini biliyordu. Arkasından “Allah yardımcınız olsun!” diye dua etti.

Zaman hayli ilerlemişti. Silâh seslerinin ardı arkası kesilmiyordu. Abdestini tazeledi. Yüreği cephede, kulağı ezandaydı. Fakat minarelerden ezandan hemen önce farklı bir ses duyuldu. Aziziye Tabyaları’nın düşman eline geçtiği, askerlerin çoğunun şehit olduğu ilân ediliyordu.

Çok dinleyemedi Nene Hatun. Çocuğunu öptü, kokladı; “Nâzım’ım seni bana Allah verdi, ben de seni yine O’na emanet ediyorum” dedi. Eline satırını ve şehit ağabeyinin tüfeğini aldığı gibi tabyalara doğru koşmaya başladı.

Tabyalarda mevzilenmiş çeteler ve düşman askerleri, kendilerine doğru akmakta olan iman ordusu karşısında sanki bütün Anadolu üzerlerine geliyormuş gibi hissettiler. Başlarındaki subayın “Ateş serbest!” emriyle namlular birbiri ardına patlamaya başladı. İlk sıralarda olanlar birer birer yere yığılıyordu; ama gelenlerin ardı arkası kesilecek gibi değildi. Düşman, hiç böyle bir direniş beklemiyordu. Yediden yetmişe bütün Erzurumlular, tabyaların demir kapılarını bir kâğıt gibi çiğneyerek düşmanın içerisine dalmıştı. Çeteler ve düşman askerleri sel sularında eriyen kar gibi eridi. Çarpışma kısa sürmüştü. Nene Hatun, çetelerin olanca kinleriyle sökerek yere attıkları şanlı bayrağı düştüğü yerden aldı, alnına götürdü ve gözlerinden yaşlar boşanırken ait olduğu yere astı. Nene Hatun ve kahraman Anadolu insanının o sabah başlattıkları mücadele, düşman, vatan topraklarını terk edinceye kadar devam etti. İyi donanımlı düşman askerlerinden tabyalar geri alındı. Üç bin düşman askeri öldürülmüştü. Buna karşılık bin kadar şehit vardı. Varsın olsundu, vatan olmadıktan sonra yaşamanın ne mânâsı vardı?!..

Nene Hatun da omzundan yaralanmıştı. Ama o âdeta kendini unutmuş, yarası daha ağır olanların yardımına koşuyordu. Birkaç dakika öncesine kadar cephede mermi taşıyan, askerlere su dağıtan ve siper kazan kahraman kadın, şimdi yerini askerlerin yaralarını saran bir hastabakıcıya bırakmıştı.

O gün Aziziye Tabyaları’nda, Müslüman-Türk tarihinde Nene Hatun’la sembolleşen altın bir sayfa daha açıldı. Allah için can siperâne mücadele veren Safiyye ve Nesibe Hatunların, Ûmm-û Hiramların, cepheye cephane taşırken donarak şehit olan Şerife Anaların, cephane arabasının boyunduruğunun bir tarafına elde kalan tek hayvanını, diğer tarafına da kendisini koşarak cepheye mermi taşıyan Ayşe Anaların oluşturduğu altın halkaya bir kahraman kadın daha eklendi.

Nene Hatun’un vatan için kahramanca verdiği mücadele bu kadarla da bitmemişti. O gün evde üç aylıkken bıraktığı oğlu Nâzım ve daha sonra doğan üç oğlundan ikisi, Birinci Dünya Harbi’nde canlarını vatana feda ettiler.

Ne mutlu sana Kahraman Ana. Kendin gazi, oğulların şehit...
